  • Selections from Santiniketan : The Abode That Ever Abides Within [Nityadham - Santiniketan Vol I] : Rabindranath Tagore
translated from Bengali to English by Jyoti Prakash Datta, Edited by Nandan Datta

It has been said in the Upanishads: One who has realised the joy of the Divine does not know any fear.

This is indeed so only if one realises that joy within one's inner self.

Once you perceive yourself as truly abiding in the eternal abode within your own inner being, the joy of existence will permeate all that you live for; you would be fearless through the love that ever dwells within you.

Where your inner self is affected by sorrows brought on by separation, disease, decay and death outwardly stalking your life, you become filled with fear. By thus allowing events in the outer world to gain mastery over your inner self, you feel as if the immortal soul, which you are in reality, is itself being diminished to no end. But wait! Because you yourself have willed this mastery of outside events over your soul - it is for you alone to perceive that your inner life, in all the glory of its existence, transcends these outside events which are causing you to be fearful.

Those among us who realise this, know that the true nature of joy is to forever keep their inner selves free for growth of the spirit, denied to those reacting only to worldly events taking place outside of themselves.
