  • I do as I please : Shakti Chattopadhyay
translated from Bengali to English by Nandini Gupta

    From the shores, much outcry
    “Whose body is this
    floating by?
    Where did he come from,
    Where was his home?”
“I do as I please!” The night thunders,
    in reply.

Equally with the dead, and the living,
Would it instantly be as inviting—
    This ocean?
I wonder if poison is the better potion,
    Ambrosia deadlier.
Each day, each night, my senses tire.

    From the shores, much outcry
“Whose body is this floating by?
    Where did he come from,
    Where was his home?”
“I do as I please!” The night thunders,
    in reply.
