  • “Why,” said the little tree . . . : Sarat Kumar Mukhopadhyay
translated from Bengali to English by Carolyn B. Brown
Eggplant | Ten Lines for a Jackfruit | “Why,” said the little tree . . .

“Why,” said the little tree to the big tree,
“don’t you bend down a bit
so I can see your face?”
“Why,” said the big tree to the little tree,
    “don’t you grow up instead
so I can touch your shoulder?”
They went on ignoring each other.
The monsoon came, at last, an enormous storm
that left them both flat on the grass,
face to face, out of it.
They lay on the cold ground, mist rising.
    It was their pride, evaporating.

    The original poem, ছোটো গাছ (ChhoTo gaachh), was collected in মৌরীর বাগান ও কিছু নতুন কবিতা (1972) and is also included in শ্রেষ্ঠ কবিতা ('Best poems'), published by Dey's Publishing, Kolkata, 1986.
